 Today's IACLEA Web site had an inquiry about spring break travel to Mexico due to reports of increasing violence in the country.  Many of our students head to Mexico for spring break.  I posted the following today on our intranet site for students and staff.  You may want to consider posting a similar message for your students, faculty and staff.

Happy New Year To Our WACLEA Colleagues!

We all work hard to further the concepts of safety and security at our respective schools; occasionally we are recognized for our dedication and hard work. It is my great pleasure to announce our own Harold Burke-Sivers has received the Father Charles Miltner, C.S.C. Award for Outstanding Administrative Service in much deserved recognition for his good work at the University of Portland. It is the first time in the University’s history that someone from Public Safety has been so recognized.

 Harold, on behalf of our colleagues at WACLEA please accept my heart-felt congratulations for your recognition. You exemplify the ideals of the dedicated professional people who work so hard, each and every day, to make our Nation’s College, Trade School, and University Campuses safe places in which to work and learn. Congratulations, Harold!

The Board of Directors met at St. Martin's Lodge on 9-January . The Spring Conference details were completed and guest speakers and instructions finalized. The 2009 Basic Academy will be held at Central Washington Universtity in Ellensburg, Washington August 3-14.

The Fall Conference location is still open for proposals and will cover professional development such as leadership skills. If anyone would like to host that conference, please submit your proposal by first of August.

Scholarship applications for 2009 are due by July 1, 2009. Recipients will be announced at the Fall 2009 Conference. For the following years the dates submissions are due has been changed. For the 2010 scholarship the applications will be accepted online beginning 1-September and will close on 1-February. Scholarships will be presented at the Spring Conference in April 2010.

January board meeting minutes will be posted online by the end of the week.
