President Tom McGill opened the meeting at 5:20pm.

The first item on the agenda was the Fall Conference. There were basically two issues to resolve. They are the location of the Fall Conference and the content of the conference. Pat Sturgill stated that he was not certain about being able to host the conference at St. Martins College in Olympia, WA. Ken Willett suggested that Missoula, MT could be an alternate site. There was a discussion about weather issues and prohibitive airline fares to Montana. It was decided that Tom McGill and Pat Sturgill would collaborate and have a decision about the site at the summer board meeting.

Bill Curtin suggested that we spend the conference discussing the implications of the “War on Terror” on us as Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. A number of issues were discussed:

•campus vulnerability

•relations with Middle Eastern students

•grant money from Homeland Security

•protection of foreign students

•students on foreign trips

Curtin volunteered to discuss with Charles Matthews III, the recently retired SAC of the Portland Office of the FBI. Charles is involved in a number of projects promoting Homeland Security issues and the Patriot Act. Bill will have a report about “content” at the summer board meeting.

President McGill then brought up the issue of the Extended Learning or Distance Learning Program. Pat Sturgill presented the board with a questionnaire about the program to send to the membership. The questionnaire was approved by the board and will be sent out to the members. Curtin told the group that Marie Lewandowski is now in charge of the distance-learning program at Portland State University and my not have the same enthusiasm or commitment to our program.

There was then a discussion about the WACLEA Retreat, tentatively scheduled for July in Olympia at St. Martin’s College. This time will be set aside for short and long term strategic planning.

There was then a web site update by Alan Laird. He stated that he was putting it together and cleaning up some of the linkage problems. He stated that if anyone has any ideas to contact him.

Tom McGill then talked at length about the importance of communication and networking and that WACLEA commit itself to sharing information as an organization and creating broad networks of communication. He cited the Spokane area as an example of regular and productive information and communication sessions among the colleges & universities.

The meeting ended at approximately 6:45pm
