The WACLEA Board of Directors met at Cavanaugh's at Capitol Center in Olympia, Washington on October 20,
1999, and a general membership meeting was held the following day at the same location.
Nominations for Board Officers resulted in one candidate for each office: John Garner, for Vice-President; Bill
Curtin, for Treasurer; and Steve Rittereiser, for Secretary. Since there were no contested races, the candidates assumed
their respective offices without an election, according to the procedure set forth in the WACLEA by-laws. Walt Huston
stepped down as President, and was succeeded by Walter Hudsick; Huston will remain an active Board member as Immediate Past President.
British Columbia schools had met and selected new member Jeff Bingley of the University of British Columbia as the B.C.
provincial representative, succeeding Tom Charbonneau. The Board thanked Tom for all his efforts on behalf of the organization,
and welcomed Jeff. The other state representatives on the Board remain unchanged at this time.
In other Board business, a planned Management Assistance Program site visit to the University of Puget Sound in
November was confirmed. The Legislative Committee reported that there was to be a bill in the Washington
state legislature that would allow for the prohibitio of possession of weapons on a college or university campus. The Board
agreed that WACLEA would work in partnership with a sponsoring institution in support of such a bill.
At the general membership meeting, Walter Hudsick presented his strategic plan, which was approved by the membership.
An excerpt from the introduction to the plan follows. The membership also approved a donation to the Memorial Fund for
Washington State Patrol Trooper Saunders, who was recently killed in the line of duty.
